Calcitriol, or 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, is the active form of vitamin D found in the body used to treat and prevent low levels of calcium in the blood of patients whose kidneys or parathyroid glands are not working normally. Low blood levels of calcium cause bone thinning. Calcitriol works by helping the body to use more of the calcium found in foods or supplements. Calcitriol increases the absorption of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract. Calcitriol provides the strengthening of the bones and teeth by organizing the absorption of phosphor and calcium. It prevents rickets. For that reason, it is necessary for the children in growing age. It is good for digestion system, provides good functioning for the intestines. It has benefits for muscles, skin and pancreas. Normally people's bodies whose get necessary sun light produce needed. In addition to this, in newborns, in children that are in growing age and in women who are in nursing period, it should be taken much more from outside with the foods. The main source of vitamin D is fish meat, milk and egg yolk.

Calcitriol mediates its biological effects by binding to the vitamin D receptor, which is principally located in the nuclei of target cells. The binding of calcitriol to the VDR allows the VDR to act as a transcription factor that modulates the gene expression of transport proteins, which are involved in calcium absorption in the intestine. The last step: Calcitriol is hydroxylated again, this time by enzymes in our kidneys (and other body tissues) to the active form of vitamin D, calcitriol also known as 1,25-di-hydroxy-cholecalciferol, or 1,25(OH)2D. Vitamin D is the name given to a vitally important group of micro-nutrients which includes vitamin D3 .
